Targeting SIDS

The Lugar Center partnered with the Union Health Foundation to leverage additional resources in order to help new babies and their parents at Union Hospital have better outcomes. In an effort to combat Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) employees and patients are trained using up to date methods on reducing SIDS in their home environment.

Every baby born at Union Hospital receives a Sleep Sack that gives parents an easy way to safely swaddle the infant that decreases the chance for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). New parents, visitors, and employees of Union Hospital now have the opportunity to see what a safe sleep environment looks like with a new crib model on the Mother/Baby Floor at Union Hospital. Additional resources were used to encourage parents to breastfeed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Finally, Union Hospital now has the capability to show parents correct positioning and safety for car seats at the hospital and also at an event for the community.
