Food as Prescription Pilot Begins for Pregnant Women

The Lugar Center in collaboration with Catholic Charities, Indiana State University, Chances and Services for Youth, Purdue Extension, Union Health Foundation, and the YMCA have launched a food as prescription pilot program for pregnant women. The program is a six week intervention aimed at increasing nutrition literacy and decreasing food insecurity. Included in the intervention is cooking demonstrations, nutrition education, access to community resources, and take home food baskets.

Unique to this intervention is the tailoring of the food demonstrations to include foods that are more readily available at food pantries and staples in the home. The intervention includes pantry staples with what can be acquired through SNAP and WIC resources. For more information or to learn more about the initiative contact the Lugar Center at 812.238.7479.
