The Family Medicine Residency program,
managed by Union Hospital, works in conjunction with the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health (formerly Midwest
Center for Rural Health) to provide hands-on training in medically underserved areas. Union Hospital’s Family
Medicine Center is adjacent to the hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana and serves as headquarters for the 18 residents
(six in each class). During their three years in the program, they gain critical on-the-job experience from assisting in
surgery and deliveries at the hospital to diagnosing illnesses and prescribing patient care plans in the family medicine
center and rural health clinics. The residency program is unique in that it has a fully accredited rural track curriculum that
residents may select during their second year. Third year rural track residents spend one day per week at our federally
designated rural health clinic located in Clay City, Indiana. This clinic serve as a an invaluable training ground for
future rural physicians, while fulfilling an immediate need for quality community-based health care.

Family Medicine Center
Union Hospital Family Medicine Center is
an 11,500 square foot state-of-the-art facility. It includes 15 examination rooms, two minor surgery rooms and a
complete laboratory. The Landsbaum Center for Health Education is attached to the Family Medicine Center and
houses the administrative offices for the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health and excellent office facilities
for medical students and medical education programs. One of the unique features of the Landsbaum Center for Health
Education is the large library and computer room. As part of the curriculum of the rural health track, a significant amount
of state-of-the-art computer equipment allows residents to access information, as well as perform certain curriculum learning
modules in the computer learning center.
Residents meet each day in the Family Medicine Center for lunch and noon time educational conferences.
The center has approximately 1200 visits each month with approximately 500 families enrolled in the Family Medicine Center.
These patients represent all walks of life, from professionals to indigent care patients. Residents are assigned 50-75 families
during the first year, 125 during the second with an increase to 200 families during the third year. Caring for all of their medical
needs, including obstetrics, the resident sees patients one half day per week, but provisions are made to see assigned patients when
the need arises.

Clay City Center for Family Medicine
The cornerstone of the Rural Training Track is the Clay City Center
for Family Medicine (CCCFM). The CCCFM houses a model rural family practice, which brings needed medical services to the community
(approx. 5,000 patients), as well as provides the family medicine residents with first-hand experience in a rural environment. The
CCCFM was established in 1993 in a 2,000 square foot building with three exam rooms, an office area, a large reception room and a
small laboratory. The offices were moderately equipped for the purpose of ambulatory patient care. In October 1996, CCCFM moved
into a new and expanded facility. The expanded facility encompasses approximately 7,000 square feet to accommodate an advanced
family medicine clinic and a significantly increased amount of space for training residents, medical students, midlevel providers
and mental health students. The new facility includes two mental health counseling rooms, a community education room that can
accommodate prenatal classes, diabetes education programs, etc., a medical laboratory designed to support an advanced range of
health care services and x-ray equipment enabling radiology services to be provided on-site. CCCFM also features an advanced
computer system and telecommunication capabilities that ensure increased access to medical information and data to track community
health care needs and trends. The site's conference room is equipped with a videoconferencing system. Residents and faculty
working on-site at CCCFM can participate (remotely)in noon conferences held at the family medicine center in Terre Haute.
