Hoosier Rural Preceptorship

The Summer Hoosier Rural Preceptorship is a summer experience for students who are enrolled in medical school in the United States during the summer between their first and second year of medical school. The purpose of the Preceptorship is to introduce medical students to rural family medicine in underserved populations in Indiana. The experience includes hands-on training at various rural sites.

Students who are selected for the program will have an eight-week summer experience. The program is divided up into four two-week periods, with two of the two-week periods being conducted in the practice of various rural physicians. All students will spend two weeks at our model rural training site of the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health (formerly Midwest Center for Rural Health) which is located in Clay City, Indiana. The other two-week period is spent at a nearby rural hospital. In addition to the above activities, students will be introduced to other underserved populations during the summer including working with other community health organizations such as the county health nurse, nursing home visits, county sanitation officer, etc. This training site is designed to introduce medical students to multi-disciplinary, community-based primary sites. Students in the project will also have access to the library and computer facilities at the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health which is located in the new Landsbaum Center for Health Education. The project is under the direction of the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health, a division of the Union Hospital Family Medicine Residency.

Stipends - Students selected for the summer program will receive a stipend of $3,000 for the eight-week program. Additionally, limited funds are available to help with housing expenses of students who do not have available housing. Students eligible for this program must be in good standing in a U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical school (and have passed all exams at the end of the first year of school). A focus on rural family medicine is also important.

International Option:

In light of recent political events in Kenya, the US Department of State has issued the following travel advisory:
"American citizens are urged to defer all travel to the Rift Valley, Western, and Nyanza Provinces. Road travel in these western provinces of Kenya remains unsafe." (Published 2/8/08 - click here for full advisory)
Due to the current unrest, the Lugar Center is postponing its plans to hold an international rotation in Kenya for its 2008 Summer Hoosier Preceptorship Class. Please keep visiting our website for future announcements.

Students selected for the Hoosier Rural Preceptorship may apply for an international rotation in Kenya as part of their summer experience. This rotation will be in conjunction with our partners in Kenya, Family Health International. All arrangements and costs will be underwritten by the Lugar Center, however, to help offset some of the expenses, the summer stipend for the students selected will be $2,000. Students selected for the international experience will be based primarily in Nakuru, Kenya and exposed to several supervised medical experiences.

Students desiring to be considered for this experience should complete the online application form and include an explanation with it.

Application deadline for the 2009 year is February 9, 2009.
