Senator Lugar Visits Terre Haute
During a visit to the Wabash Valley on July 9, Senator Richard G. Lugar toured Union Hospital East and visited with staff of the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health. He discussed many of the challenges that we as Americans are facing, including healthcare, and specifically rural care.

Lugar Center's Stephanie Laws Receives National Recognition
Stephanie Laws, RN, BSN, Project Associate with the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health, was recently invited to participate in a workshop on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in High-Risk Rural Communities, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. According to the Workshop Executive Summary, the objective of the workshop; held June 14-15 in Bethesda, Maryland; was to “provide research recommendations for the development, implementation, and evaluation of family and community interventions to reduce obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in rural communities of the United States. Thurman Alvey, D.O., Elected President of IOA
Thuman Alvey, III, D.O. was recently elected President of the Indiana Osteopathic Association (IOA). Dr. Alvey practices family medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) at the Union Hospital Family Medicine Center where he also completed his internship and residency. He received his Osteopathic medical degree from Pikeville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2003. He is board certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and in OMT by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice.
The IOA represents more than 800 osteopathic physicians and their patients in Indiana. Since 1897, the association's goal has been to improve the health of Indiana residents. July 10th at 8:30, The 2010 Mayberry Classic!
The fifth annual Mayberry Classic has been scheduled for July 10th at 8:30am at Goshorn Park in Clay City. This will include a 5K run and a 5K walk for ages six and above. Also, there will be a 1 mile Fun Walk/Run for all who want to participate. Awards will be given for the top three male and female finishers in each age group for 5K Run. Plus, there will be awards for Overall Female, Overall Male, Masters Male and Masters Female. All participants 15 and under will receive a medal regardless of event. The course will use chip timing devices. Registration forms are available at the Clay City Center for Family Medicine, 315 Lankford Street, Clay City, Indiana, or you may download a form from the Richard Lugar Center for Rural Health by clicking below. Pre-registration forms may be mailed to Clay City Center for Family Medicine. The address is P.O Box 96, Clay City, IN 47841. You may also fax your forms to the Center at (812)939-3414. There will be an additional $5.00 charge in each category if you are not pre-registered. Pre-registration is encouraged and must be submitted by June 25th to guarantee a T-Shirt. Same-day registration will be at the park at 7:30am and the race will begin at 8:30am.
